How high should my hurricane deductible be?

A hurricane deductible is based on a percentage of the insured value of your home. There is no dollar amount used to calculate the hurricane deductible rate. In most cases, your hurricane deductible should be anywhere from 1% to 5% of the insured value of your home. However, coastal areas that are more vulnerable to hurricanes might require higher deductibles.

For instance, if the insured value of your home is $100,000, then your hurricane deductible should be anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000. That might seem like a lot of money, but it’s small compared to the amount of compensation that you will receive.
