What is the difference between a public adjuster and an insurance adjuster?

A public adjuster works for the policyholder, while the insurance adjuster works for the insurance company. Insurance adjusters are sometimes called independent adjusters if they are not employed by the insurance company, but hired externally. Otherwise, the insurance adjuster is an employee of the insurance company.

After you file a claim with your insurance company, an insurance adjuster will visit your home to investigate the damages noted in your claim. Although the insurance adjuster is supposed to be fair and independent, they ultimately report back to the insurance company, not the policyholder. That’s why the policyholder should hire a public adjuster, whose only job is to protect the interests of the policyholder.
